ACEE Symposium: Enough about the problem! Climate solutions here & now
“Our Shared Future” symposium session: Conversations and education about climate change typically focus on understanding the issue: What do we know, and how bad is it? But this approach does little to address the problem nor the growing anxiety students feel about their future. A more important question we should be asking is: What can we DO about it? The answer might surprise you! Be empowered by strategies and resources to explore the full spectrum of climate solutions with your students. Explore the skills and knowledge needed to build a brighter future while contributing to student wellness. Leave with links between curriculum, real-world climate action plans, and Indigenous perspectives.

STEM in Stories: Connecting Curriculum to Popular Culture
Find STEM in your favourite stories, and in your students’ favourite pastimes and activities. This session will teach participants how to find the STEM topics in the stories that their students love and how they can incorporate those stories into their Science and Math lessons. The word “STEM” (an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) has become commonplace in the science classroom, but we don't often stop to think about what it means. In this interactive and collaborative session, we will define STEM and demonstrate how it can be leveraged to guide authentic learning. With the help of the presenters’ varied scientific backgrounds, participants will realize that STEM is all around them – including in children’s stories!

*Pre-recorded* Magnetic Manipulatives: 3D Printed Whiteboard Tools for Teaching High School Science
There has been a shift in educational technology back toward the humble front of class whiteboard. Inexpensive, ubiquitous, and rarely in need of a system update, your whiteboard is an essential teaching tool...if only you could move and manipulate the diagrams you draw, like on an interactive whiteboard. Enter Reuben and Brad, two seasoned High School Science teachers who are here to show you: a) how to use manipulatives that attach to your whiteboard via magnets in your Biology, Chemistry, Physics or General Science classroom, and b) how to create your own set of vector arrows, chromosomes, molecules and more to help your students understand science in a low-fi, inexpensive and very effective way.

Misconceptions and Disinformation in Science and Education
The idea that scientific theories are uncertain is a common misconception many people have about science. Or that you need a force to keep something moving. Or that global warming is the result of a whole in the Ozone layer. Misconceptions are common, pervasive and exist for a number of different reasons. We can hold scientific misconceptions without even being aware of it. We often accept as true things we have been told since childhood and those beliefs can be stubborn and very resistant to change. All students enter science classes with misconceptions and teachers have the daunting task of convincing them of an alternate reality. In this session Kerry and Ian will provide examples of common misconceptions of both scientific facts and scientific processes as well as provide techniques to help students along the road to understanding.

Explore before Explain in Elementary Science: A sequence to help our students make meaning
How can we update and refresh our science instruction to bring this 1996 program of studies into the 21st Century? When teaching elementary science we often focus on the discrete “hands on investigations”. While this is important, it is not a complete picture of how knowledge is gained in science. Join this session to learn the importance of this instructional sequence, rooted in research, to help our students gain conceptual understanding and learn authentic science practices.

There are many lab experiences mandated in the Alberta Physics 20-30 Program of Studies, 2007. These experiences do not need to use expensive equipment and do not need to involve intricate procedures. The goal of this session is to provide teachers with ideas for over 40 lab experiences spanning Physics 20 and 30, have participants engage in a discussion of program expectations regarding these experiences and how implementing a guided inquiry or open-ended approach enhances student learning. Teachers will also be introduced to various evaluation methods and scoring guides for lab skills that can be implemented in the classroom.

***Pre-recorded*** The Importance of Storytelling for Science Education: Weird, Funny, Useful.
How killer giant beavers, the debate between the spermists and the ovists, and the cross-curricular story of nylon can help engage students, illuminate the process of science, and incorporate indigenous perspectives into your science practice. This talk will address the importance of storytelling for humanizing scientists and revealing the process of science in science education. I have included some of my favorite stories that can be slipped into science lessons for divisions 2-4 (although high school is my world). Attendees will leave with some stories they likely haven’t heard before, and concrete ideas for using stories to help incorporate indigenous perspectives into their classroom.

Dissection: Current Trends and Alternatives
Dissection is common practice in Alberta high school science classrooms, but is it really necessary? In this session we will discuss the pedagogical merit of animal and non-animal teaching methods along with the ethical considerations for common species used in dissection. We will look at current animal use trends in post-secondary institutes and the ethical guidelines for using animals in teaching, testing and research in Canada. Finally, we will explore alternatives and discuss inclusive student opt-in policies used by some Canadian school districts. In this session we will: • Review of the pedagogical merit of animal and non-animal teaching methods; • Explore trends related to the use of animals in science at the post-secondary and societal level; • Introduce the internationally recognized 3Rs principle that guides the ethical use of animals in science; • Discuss student perceptions about dissection and the benefits of “opt-in” policies; • Have the opportunity to explore some non-animal alternatives that can be used in the classroom.

Fostering Scientific Literacy: Vaccines (LIVE SESSION ONLY)
Scientific literacy is a must when it comes to understanding important scientific concepts. So when the COVID-19 vaccines started rolling out, a lot of skepticism followed. Many folks questioned the safety of it because of fear mongering posts raising the concern of how quickly they were developed. In this presentation, we want to equip educators with the support and training they need to foster scientific literacy in their classrooms, especially around vaccine confidence and other topical controversial science topics. We will provide credible resources that can help you and your students counter myths and misinformation, as well as include tips on how to deal with resistance from groups like parents and/or guardians.
