NCTCA Breakfast Presentation: Education Bridged Me to My Culture
Join Angela Hall as she walks us through her journey as an Indigenous teacher and the many moments within Education that bridged her to her culture. Having grown up in foster care without connection to her Métis heritage, Angela would discover, within a space of a school and its community, the wisdom, power, and beauty of her Indigenous ancestors. Through the years, her teaching placements would bring many experiences including learning to jig, picking sweetgrass, attending sweat lodges, sewing ribbon skirts, dancing in a Sundance, listening to Elders and receiving her Cree name. Every encounter deepened her understanding of self and gave her a voice that she would later express in the artworld. Forever grateful, Angela wants to share the importance of bridging students to Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being to help them grow to their highest potential.

Chatter The Voice in Our Head, Why It Matters, and How to Harness It (Recording available until April 1, 2022)
The most important conversation we have each day isn’t with our boss, our spouse, or our friends: it’s the one we have with ourselves. When we’re facing a challenging task, our inner voice can motivate us and help us keep our focus. But more often than not, we come up against the nagging voice that tells us we can’t do it, or that people will laugh at us if we try. The million-dollar question, then, is how can we transform our self-saboteur, determined to undermine our success, into an internal life coach that will buoy us up and help us expand our potential? Enter Ethan Kross. A world-class psychological scientist, Kross has written one of the most definitive guides to mastering self-talk in modern history. In Chatter, he uses a blend of cutting-edge science (from his own lab) and real-world case studies to help us harness the power of our inner voice. The tools are all around us—from the objects we surround ourselves with, to our relationships with other people, the physical spaces we inhabit, and the digital worlds we interact in. This talk is a lively exploration of how we can use those tools to make our inner voice work in our favour, and it answers some valuable questions along the way. For instance, why do we seem immune to toxic chatter when we attempt to provide other people with advice? What factors determine whether we receive—and provide—helpful or harmful social support? And how can we approach our decision-making differently, learning to control our emotions and reason wisely instead of acting on impulse? An expert story-teller, Kross brings his research to life in a way that is fascinating, accessible, and immediately applicable to our daily lives.

Nurturing Resilience: Nine Ways Families, Schools, and Communities can Help Children Thrive (Recording available until March 11, 2022)
In this fast-paced, story-filled presentation, Dr. Ungar will show that children’s resilience is much more than their individual ability to overcome adversity. It is just as much the result of how well their families, schools and communities work together to help vulnerable young people navigate their way to the resources they need for wellbeing, and whether those resources are made available to children in ways children experience as meaningful. In addition to exploring what resilience means to children from many different backgrounds, Dr. Ungar will also provide nine practical strategies parents, caregivers and educators can use to help children heal, no matter a child’s emotional, psychological or behavioral problems. Specific learning objectives for this presentation are: 1. To understand how children and families with complex needs use “problem” behaviours to enhance their resilience and wellbeing when more socially acceptable solutions are not available; 2. To become familiar with how to assess resilience; 3. To learn about nine resilience-promoting resources necessary for positive child development; 4. To develop strategies for working without resistance with hard-to-reach, culturally diverse children, adolescents, and their families; 5. To discuss ways services can be structured for children and families that make resilience more likely to occur.

Grit & Growth Mindset: Why Some Environments Motivate People to Become Excellent (Recording available until April 1, 2022)
Today, it’s more important than ever to be a “learner”—that is, to be able to teach yourself new skills, using your connections to experts or resources you find online. But most people have grown up in an educational system that valued “knowers”—people who have memorized facts or skills. How can you create an environment that fosters the grit needed to be a learner? How can you shake people out of the old model of education, so that they can adapt their skills and knowledge to the quickly-changing economy? In this keynote, David Yeager outlines key insights from the new science of motivation and learning. He answers questions like: why do some people choose the easy route, rather than teach themselves the hard things? Why do some people wither in the face of critical feedback, while others take the feedback and get better? Why do some people only learn something if it’s fun, but other people learn it even if it’s tedious? He also focuses on how leaders create environments that support people’s motivation to learn, and outlines practical guidance coming from the field of behavioral science.

Gérer l’impact socio-émotionnel et traumatique durant un pandémie (Présenté qu'en direc!)
Overview No two individuals, families, workplaces or communities are exactly the same. Covid-19 and its variants have demonstrated how broad the range of responses are to the threat of illness and the aftermath of loss. Yet beyond the virus lay the larger social, emotional and traumatic responses to the effects of quarantine and other containment measures. We say in the Traumatic Event Systems Model (TES™) of Crisis and Trauma Response that “high-profile"" trauma does not usually create new dynamics in human systems but instead simply intensifies already existing dynamics in families, workplaces, communities, etc.” Therefore, as exposure to trauma increases, escalated family dynamics, relational dynamics, and social dynamics become evident. At the core of this presentation are insights into the mental health needs that have evolved throughout the pandemic as well as our growing understanding of how to better assess and intervene. These dynamic insights have relevance at all levels of our professional responsibilities ranging from self to systems that we are responsible for. Teaching Points: • Pre-Pandemic Functioning as a Predictor of Symptom Development (Open versus Closed Systems). • Impact of Media and Social Media (High-Profile Traumatic Events). • The “Trauma Response Continuum” for Individuals and Systems (Stress Response Continuum). • Overfunctioners and Underfunctioners. • Non-Death-Related Loss • Effects of Quarantine: The Impaired “Closeness-Distance Cycle” in Families. • The “Trauma-Violence Continuum” (Dr. Marleen Wong, USC and J. Kevin Cameron). • Words are Powerful: The Strategic Use of language. • Reasonable Expectations of Self and Systems. • The Essential and Universal Element for Recovery from Trauma. • Assessing Self and Others: BASIC-IR™.

Indigenous Reconciliation Finding Common Ground Through Dialogue (Recording available until April 1, 2022)
While working for the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, Waneek Horn-Miller knew process was just as important as results. The inquiry sought to expose the underlying causes of violence in this country—and make recommendations to eliminate them—in a timely, organized fashion. But this had to be balanced with the emotional needs of participants—their deep need to be heard, validated, and humanized. In other words, it needed to grant victims, and their families, the opportunity to heal. In this keynote, Horn-Miller unpacks the hard but necessary work ahead of us if we want to escape our history of conflict and move to a place of shared understanding. If we embrace the true spirit of reconciliation, we need to make it a way of life—a cornerstone of how we proceed as a multicultural society—and not just a destination. To Horn-Miller, this takes listening, and dialogue; it means extending empathy to those with different outlooks, and not shying away from debate; it means solutions-based thinking rooted in our shared aspirations. But if we can do this, we can do something unique in this country. And we can embrace what reconciliation is all about—a way of addressing wrongs, living in harmony, and healing for those who need it most.

The power of the group: What can teachers and administrators learn from guppies & cockroaches? (Recording available until April 1, 2022)
A typical human being is smart, rational, and predictable. But when you put a bunch of them together, that can quickly fall apart. From Black Friday shoppers stampeding at the mall, to rioting Canucks fans at the end of a playoff run, examples of “dumb” crowds aren’t hard to find. But why? After all, when you put individual animals into groups, the opposite usually happens. A guppy within a school of fish makes faster and more accurate decisions than it can when it’s alone. A group of cockroaches can solve math problems well beyond what any individual cockroach can do. In the past few years, the science of group dynamics has revealed many jaw-dropping phenomena, and the fascinating but understandable mechanisms behind them. I’ll discuss this work, with a focus on tangible lessons for teachers and administrators who work with groups of students in a classroom, or teams of staff-members in a school.

Understanding and Managing the Social, Emotional and Traumatic Impacts of a Worldwide Pandemic: Fact (LIVE SESSION ONLY)
Overview No two individuals, families, workplaces or communities are exactly the same.

Building a Better Teacher How Teaching Works (and How to Teach It to Everyone) (Recording available until April 1, 2022)
Everyone agrees that a great teacher can have an enormous impact. Yet we still don’t know what, precisely, makes a teacher great. Is it a matter of natural-born charisma? Or does great teaching require something more? In this talk, Elizabeth Green introduces a new generation of educators who are revealing the hidden science behind their art. A former principal studies the country’s best teachers and discovers a common set of techniques to help children pay attention. Two math teachers videotape a year of lessons and develop a new approach that has nine-year-olds writing sophisticated mathematical proofs. Through their stories—and the hilarious and heartbreaking theater that unfolds between children and teachers every day—Green examines the dynamics of truly effective teaching. Exploring the astonishingly diverse skills exceptional teachers must develop, she provides a new way for teachers, parents, and policymakers to judge what is needed in the classroom—and considers how to make every teacher great.

Residential Schools, Reconciliation & Moving Forward (Recording available until April 1, 2022)
For millennia, Indigenous people sustained thriving, living cultures and societies on the back of the Turtle. We wove our histories into intricate and beautiful stories to keep our truths alive, generation upon generation upon generation. Then those ships sailed armed with a colonial toolkit filled with the necessary implements to commence a course of systematic impoverishment among Indigenous peoples. With clear intention they sought dispossession through law and policy, the creation of dependency and ultimately near total oppression of what had been self-determining forever. One of those implements was the strategy to dismember Indigenous families, and thus communities and nations, by taking the children. There is the colonizer’s account of that. We see it in the history books. And then there is ours. Creating and holding space for Indigenous people to correct history; to impart the truth, is a necessary pre-requisite to reconciliation. Let us, together, light a dialogue fire and keep the flame burning until the truth overturns the colonial lie.

Understanding Indigenous Education from an Indigenous point of view (Recording available until February 14, 2022)
As a First Nation woman who has had the opportunity to experience the education system from many different points of view I feel that there is so much to be shared and much for educators to understand. As a student first, my education journey had been a bumpy one and often difficult to navigate. Then deciding to trust in the belief that my Elders have in my I found the courage to take on a roll as an Educator qualified through the teachings of my people rather than a university I found myself being the only Indigenous person on staff. This had its share of challenges, and now as I embark on a whole new journey as a partner in a new, independent Indigenous organization my challenge is to find my place in the Education space as my own boss. It has been a journey but an exciting one that I can’t wait to share with all of you.
