One of the central goals of education in Alberta is to personalize education for each student. In this workshop I will present how I taught students in my physics, chemistry, science and mathematics classes through a method that I call Structured Independent Learning. The intention of this workshop is to describe how I provided an environment in which students could find their own path through the learning of the course material. In this environment students learned time management and self-responsibility skills, independent and inter-dependent learning skills, and they learned the course material in greater depth. The workshop closes with a discussion of how teachers can shift from being a Sage on the Stage to being a Guide on the Side in their own practice.
