Helping Children with Grief and Loss In this session you will discover what grief is and the common myths about dealing with sad emotions that confuse children. They want to be heard and not fixed. You will learn how to replace these myths with practical guidance for your children. There are many Myths about dealing with sad emotions that confuse children: • Time heals all wounds • Replace the loss • Cry alone • Be strong for others • Bury your feelings • Don’t feel bad, have a cookie, you’ll feel better… The feelings experienced during loss are normal and natural, however grief is also the most neglected and misunderstood experience, often both by the grievers and those around them. There are over 40 different types of losses. As a society we use intellectual comments to try and help grievers, however grief is about a broken heart not a broken brain. Grief is emotional not intellectual so these comments are not helpful.
