Too often, we spend long stretches of time watching feature films, only to have students discuss the film for a few minutes, and frequently with little demonstration of understanding or critical thinking. What if, instead, we flipped the time investment? Spend only a little time watching films (or portions of films) and dig deeply? This will be a “hands-on” introduction to the concept of “micro-film studies”. We’ll watch very short portions of larger works - sometimes only a few seconds in length - and use these to delve deeply into how film creates meaning through editing structure, framing, sound, etc. We will begin with a short overview of film language, then jump in to various short clips. All resources will be shared after the session.
Shane has been teaching Film Studies/Production for the past 10 years, alongside ELA, Drama, Art and Computers. He's most excited about helping young filmmakers find the areas of production they're most passionate about.
