Charity Alook
Parkland School Division
Literacy Facilitator
Centre for Education
My name is Charity Alook and I am from Treaty 8 Territory. I am the Literacy Facilitator for Parkland School Division. My educational background includes teaching in grades K, 2,3,5,and 6; as well as a school Literacy Lead and Elementary school Principal in a northern First Nation Community.
As a teacher, my experience and skills were in classroom management, differentiation, small group instruction, implementation of the Daily 5 and Cafe, guided reading, assessment using the PM Benchmark, to name a few. I work collaboratively with my peers and am always willing to share the knowledge I gained in any of these areas.
As a Literacy Lead, I gained experience and skill in Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment, Levelled Literacy Intervention, Joyful Literacy, setting literacy goals for IPP's and data collection. It was my role to collect student literacy levels, input the data into a Google Sheet, co-created by me, and use that to then assign severely below and below students a variety of interventions. Providing teachers with support in literacy instruction, utilization of resources, grouping students for guided reading, IPP's, planning literacy events and presenting are a few of the other responsibilities that I had.
Additionally, I have gained 4 years of experience in the Collaborative Response Model, in which I have worked closely with Jigsaw Learning to begin implementation at my former school. My role was primarily to facilitate team meetings, both as a literacy Lead and as a principal, assist in the preparation of "class boards", take notes, follow up and use the online component of WeCollab to document action plans for students. Through collaboration, the team and I created a behaviour matrix, and a Student Champion Group. Through the Collaborative Response Model, we were able to use literacy data to target student literacy goals and support student achievement.
Currently I am immersed in QPAS, PAST, Intensive Phonological Awareness Programming, Words Their Way and Fountas and Pinnell Word Study Kits and the relation between the two.
I am more than happy to share ideas, strategies, support your literacy programming and answer any question you may have! Feel free to reach out!
