In the classroom, I am not just a teacher; I am a teacher-student. And learners are more than students; they are student-teachers. In The Tone of Teaching, Max Van Manen writes that a teacher “must be an even better learner than the child who is being (taught).” In the classroom, we work together in order to positively and significantly impact each person’s learning. This philosophy of social learning systems permeates the school culture – among classrooms and colleagues – and the district culture – among schools and divisions. It is the role of any teacher to impact student learning by enhancing his or her own learning. And this enhancement ought to be collaborative, in which professional dialogue promotes reflection on our practices towards iteratively refining our understanding about how learning best happens, and teaching accordingly. This is our goal: to improve student learning by enhancing our own professional practice.
